Abstract

Surgery for Class III and Asymmetric Case: Timing and Sequence of Procedures

by Grybauskas Simonas

Class III asymmetric patients often present a challenge for orthodontists especially if they are treated in adolescent age. Although small asymmetries may be managed with growth modification, pathological growth patters related to condylar hyperactivity or combination of condylar hyperactivity and contralateral condylar hypoactivity may present problems since they counteract the efforts of orthodontic camouflage and the ongoing skeletal growth beyond the years of adulthood may significantly jeopardize the outcome of orthodontic treatment. Moreover, such pathological growth can cause significant facial asymmetries and cause dissatisfaction towards the orthodontic treatment on inaccurate diagnosis that lead to treatment failures. The lecture will address pathological growth patterns related to condylar hyperactivity and hypoactivity leading to development of CIII asymmetries and protocols of its management. Timing and sequence of interplay between the surgeon and the orthodontist may lead a crucial role. Diagnostic tools for early detection and monitoring of dynamics will be presented.
