Abstract

A KISS Way to Manage Deep Bite with Alexander Discipline

by Bragastini Francesca

One of the most common malocclusion found throughout the world is the deep bite malocclusion. In a true deep bite case, the patient exhibits an excessive anterior overbite and an excessive curve of Spese in the mandbular arch. In addition, the incisor edges of the mandibular incisors contact the lingual surfaces of the maxillary anterior teeth or the palatal tissue. The method of leveling the curve of Spese with the Alexander Discipline is by a combination of mainly bicuspid extrusion, and minor incisor intrusion. The Alexander Discipline effectively controls the mandibular incisor position during the leveling process and does not cause excessive opening of the vertical dimension during treatment. The -6° angulation in the molar band does cause the mandible molar to tip bucket least that amount during treatment although there is a 30% loss often treatment. There is an alteration of the occlusal plane that appears to be stable over time. The results are stable in the long term.
