Abstract

Orthodontics Purpose-Goals-Results: the Need to Set Up the Treatment with Awareness

by Benedetti Remo

This presentation aims to provide a starting point of view for reflection on the current operational dynamics of orthodontists operating within a discipline that often seems to prioritize treatment methods over the diagnostic process. The Authors’ objective is to define the Goals of orthodontic treatment and to identify the Purpose of orthodontics. The Purpose represents the general and fundamental principle to be pursued, while the Goals encompass the intermediate and specific steps to be taken to achieve the Purpose. However, at times, the Goals of the orthodontist may not align with those of the patient. Throughout presentation, the main Goals of both the patient and the orthodontist will be identified, along with the underlying motivations for each party. Additionally, the report will delineate the principles of coexistence between the parties involved.

Learning Objectives

After this lecture, you will be able to define the difference between Goals and the Purpose of orthodontics, their relationship with the own motivations of each patient and the role of orthodontist as mediator between the two parties involved.
After this lecture, you will be able to define the Goals of the orthodontic treatments on the basis of scientific evidence and clinical experience.
After this lecture, you will be able to identify the orthodontics Purpose, as general and fundamental principle to pursue daily, during every orthodontics treatment.
