Abstract

More than MARPE: Advancements in Maxillary Transverse Discrepancy Treatment

by Gurgel Julio

In recent years, there has been substantial progress in the treatment of maxillary transverse discrepancies using mini-screw assisted rapid palatal expander (MARPE) and other bone-borne rapid palatal expanders. These innovative techniques have proven to be effective across a wide range of age groups, including children, adolescents, and adults. By inducing skeletal changes, these expanders bring about notable improvements in malocclusion correction, aesthetic appearance, and functional outcomes. The current body of literature extensively covers various models of MARPE and MARPE-like appliances, each specifically designed to address according to the skeletal discrepancies and cater to individual patient needs. This lecture aims to offer a comprehensive and in-depth overview of the indications, supporting evidence, and perceptions surrounding MARPE appliances and their diverse variations. By presenting clinical cases, the lecture will provide valuable insights into strategies employed to correct transverse maxillary deficiencies, while highlighting the concurrent functional enhancements that can be achieved. This presentation recognizes the importance of exploring the full potential of MARPE and related expander appliances in the treatment of maxillary transverse discrepancies. By delving into the existing knowledge and experiences in this field, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the practical applications of these appliances and their impact on patients' overall oral health and well-being. This lecture serves as a valuable platform for sharing insights, exchanging ideas, and fostering a collective advancement in the field of maxillary transverse discrepancy treatment.
