Abstract
Maxillary expansion: Tooth-Bone Borne or Bone Borne
by Maino Giovanna
Nowadays, one of the most recent uses of skeletal anchorage is for orthopedic expansion of the maxilla, even in individuals with skeletal maturation beyond adolescence; this has promoted the use of devices with different modes of design and support. The differences and indications for the use of an exclusively bony support (Bone Borne), versus a hybrid tooth-bone support (Tooth-Bone Borne), will be emphasized. This presentation will highlight the design and clinical differences achievable with appliance-driven skeletal anchorages versus those achievable with expanders designed on bone availability (bone-driven appliance) and illustrate the biomechanical advantages of the latest innovations.
