Abstract
Alveolar Corticotomy: a Different Perspective
by Spena Raffaele
Alveolar decortication has been generally associated to orthodontic treatment to accelerate tooth movement and reduce treatment time. Both aspects are still widely discussed in the literature, controversial researches and conclusions can be found, but frankly clinically and scientifically difficult to evaluate and demonstrate. The author has used alveolar corticotomy in the past 25 years in his clinical practice. Since the early days, protocols and objectives have been clearly different from the common ones. He has extensively published articles and chapters and he has presented papers worldwide about his own personal experience. This different view of the biological and biomechanical orthodontic advantages of this surgical adjunct to an orthodontic treatment will be presented. Six keys to be efficient and effective with alveolar corticotomy will be proposed and in-depth described. Several clinical cases will be shown in a step-by-step way from the initial stages to the final result and long-term stability
