Abstract
Mechanics of Bracket Free Segmented Arch
by Choy Kwangchul
It is not necessary to advocate the advantages of the application of biomechanics in orthodontics. The segmented arch philosophy by CJB is built upon these biomechanical principles since 1950s. It pursues the most efficient tooth movement by applying continuous light magnitude of force and consistent force system to the teeth without loss of control. However the segmented arch requires special attachments such as auxiliary tube on the molar attachments and vertical or horizontal tube on the cuspid. Recently new bracket free technique and materials were developed to replace the conventional bracket appliance. It is characterized by providing less wire change, significant enhancement of application of more continuous force utilization by augmented forces system with better control of adverse side effects. Also, absence of brackets produces less discomfort, assures esthetics, and reducing concerns about decalcification. The classical biomechanical principles of segmented arch have been incorporated into bracket free orthodontics.
