Abstract

The Treatment of Asymmetries: Efficacy and Predictability Evaluation

by Farronato Giampietro

Dysgnathic patterns characterized by asymmetrical functional or skeletal aspects have always been a matter of wide debate in the orthognathodontic field. The reason for this is that asymmetrical dysgnathic patterns lend themselves to different interpretations by various authors, and a definitive consensus opinion has not yet been reached on some aspects. Asymmetries offer specific clinical diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic issues that well differentiate them from other malformative patterns. Certainly, the etio-pathogenetic evaluation of causal genesis also offers cues for various interpretations. In this discussion we will consider the most salient diagnostic, etiologic and therapeutic aspects, suggesting the interpretive key in genesis-causal and logical interpretation of treatment. The various nosological pictures of orthognathodontic interest on the growing and late-growing subject susceptible to functional, orthopedic, orthodontic and orthodontic-surgical treatment will be considered.
