Abstract

Pick Up the Baton and Run to the Future

The development of new technology and methods has a tremendous impact on orthodontic treatments. As young dentists, we are presented with the opportunity to build upon the solid principles established by our great mentors while constantly being surrounded by new information and innovations. Nowadays, patients are becoming more informed and demanding, leading us to encounter more challenging treatments. That is why I always keep in mind the DISCIPLINE definition and the philosophy from Prof. Wick Alexander, who emphasized the pursuit of excellence, knowing that you are giving your best even when no one else will ever know. Picking up the baton from previous generations and dealing with challenging cases today is a great responsibility for all of us. Therefore, it is vital to be aware and thankful that we have stable principles to follow - THE 20 PRINCIPLES OF THE ALEXANDER DISCIPLINE - and the support of our amazing mentors. They serve as the inspiration that leads us to finish the game in the best way we can. In my lecture, I will present some challenging cases, employing the Alexander Discipline. I will share my experiences with some mentors and how they supported me. My goal is to share three steps that you can implement in your practice when facing challenging cases. 1. Learn how to follow the principles of the Alexander Discipline effectively. 2. Improve your communication with patients who have challenging treatment plans or when considering plan adjustments. 3. Gain ideas on how to maintain motivation and persevere until the very end in difficult cases.
